This is a game that I played as a child. There are probably many children that still play it today. This game has a history, so there are many variations of it. But I’ll tell you the way it was played when I was a child. First of all, it’s an outside game that gives children exercise and fresh air, especially in the warmer weather. If you have never watched a hummingbird while it feeds, you’re in for a treat. They are amazing little birds that can fly upside down, hover and even fly backwards. Although most people think that they feed by sucking nectar through their long beaks, they actually lick it with their tongues as they hover at the feeder or perch on it. More often than not, you will see them hovering while they feed. Some of the weigh only about one-tenth of an ounce and they can flap their wings up to 78 times a minute, which creates the “hum” that they make when they fly. With the calories they burn up in flight each day, they eat about half of their weight each day. So you can imagine how much those tiny birds can eat! (more…)
